6-5
After that night, I didn’t end up waking up until 11 this morning. That was good because I was really short on sleep and on temper last night and that’s just a bad way to spend this week of vacation. Mom had grabbed some rolls from breakfast for me so that I could sleep later. I showed her all the gifts I’d bought and gave her hers. We found out internet is not free here so I’ll just get this all posted when I reach Abby’s I’d imagine. I might use our free 30-minutes to try and post some of these mid-week. We decided to take today to just decide what we want to do the rest of the week. My passport was still locked in the safe. The poor guy who came to help had no idea what to do. He called and got the combination for it but then even with that couldn’t figure it out. So when he went to call again I put in the code and got it open. That was a relief. Then I decided I wanted to wash my clothes so that they would have plenty of time to be drying. That took a while and my clothes are now hanging all over the room and I am sleeping in damp pajamas.

After getting the laundry figured out we decided to head over to San Giorgio to go up in the bell tower over there and see the views of Venice. So we got a vaporetto pass and went over. We saw the church San Giorgio Maggiore which was built by Paladio and created a whole new style called Palladian. It’s really symmetrical and apparently has a lot of “mathematical perfection”. We got see the choir area where they still do Gregorian chants today. That was cool it was really echoey. After that we rode the vaporetto back to Venice and went wandering around Piazzeta San Marco. We found some gelato and looked at some shops, found a café Mom wanted to find. She wants to sit there some time and listen to the different music groups that the cafes in that place all seem to have. I am excited for that night. We went to mass in the basilica because Mom heard that is the only time they light up the mosaics in there. Mass was tough. I swear, put a man with a soothing voice talking in the same room as me and I am out every time. It was a struggle to stay awake, especially since it was in Italian but the mosaics were beautiful.
We shot out of there and came back to the hotel to find my clothes still pretty damp. I mapped out our week tentatively and we sat on the terrace under an awning while it sprinkled. Then we came here and Mom has been reading from her guidebook while I have been hunting through mine making sure we are going to be able to get to all the stuff we marked. There is a surprising amount of stuff to see and all of it is open from 10 'til 5:30. This wouldn’t be a problem except I really want to go see Verona and Padua now. We’ll make it, I think, and if we don’t get to everything it won’t be a big deal. I really am excited for those side trips out of Venice as well as the churches and things we’re planning on finding within it. Well it’s off to bed we have a fairly early start!
